That's an Interesting Question.

This morning I woke up early and meet with Janelle to spread some pine needle mulch at her neighbors house. We worked about three hours putting down the mulch and pruning back the ivy from the garden paths. In the south ivy really goes crazy climbing up tree trunks. Which looks pretty but is really not good for the trees.

It's sad for me to say but this is the most activity I have done all winter. I will probably be very sore tomorrow. Oh well, it's good for me and it's a gorgeous day!

On the way home I was listening to NPR in my car. They were talking about a small farming community of about 1,200 residents. This town holds an annual event that poses a question each year for all to answer. The topics are incredibly varied but very intriguing questions to ask such a small farming community. The host debates and chose a winnter from the hundreds of entries each year.

This years question is, "Is it ever wrong to do the right thing?"

It really got me thinking about situations where perhaps it is better to do the wrong thing. To me that is what a little white lie is, right? A small lie that would be more harmful if shared than if kept to ones self?

What do you all think? "Is it ever wrong to do the right thing?"

I agree with you, sometimes it is best not to do the right thing if it save someone's feelings.
What a lovely way to bond a community together! Hope that your not too sore tomorrow!

If a white lie can save someone from a small unnecessary hurt, I'd agree that there are times when it is wrong to do the right thing. Great question!

No, it's not. Because you have to leave room for the gray that's always between the black and white.

Three hours was that with a long tea break or without? You should be fine tomorrow. Your question is a tough one, depending on who or whom you are dealing with.

LOL, yes, I know three hours isn't much but it's been awhile. Gardens are all in MI remember and I have been here in NC since September. Not much garden activity for me.

thanks for the comments everyone.

Is it ever wrong to do the right thing? Loaded question indeed. I think if more harm will come from doing the right thing, such as coming clean with a small white lie, then don't do it. You have weigh the benefits all around. But don't break the law!!

It's odd--this is somehow much less obvious than the question you ended up mulling, and the one I at first thought you must have asked: Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?

I'm with your commenters (except TC, I think--) that there are exceptions to every rule. And I'd say, TC, that even though the question is phrased in terms of black and white (wrong and right), it's about exploring those grey areas between them.

I'll have to look that story up on NPR. I think the first thing to do is to define right and wrong. Not an easy thing to do!
